Why Achilles YL?
Explorer Scouts are encouraged to shape their own experience, from the activities they take part in to the identity of their Unit. Choosing the name Achilles reflects the Unit’s independence, ownership, and ability to make decisions for themselves, while still being part of the wider Scout District. A unique name also helps distinguish the Unit and strengthens their shared identity.
Achilles represents courage, resilience, and strength – a reminder that everyone has their own vulnerabilities, but also the power to grow, support one another, and overcome challenges together.

The new Explorer Programme is built for you. Designed with young people like you (and the volunteers who support you), it’s all about gaining real-life skills, boosting your wellbeing, and making a difference where it matters.
Whether you want to try something new, challenge yourself, or make an impact in your community, there’s loads to choose from. With a mix of brand-new and familiar Activity Badges, exciting Challenge Awards, and big Top Awards to aim for, your journey is clearer, and totally yours to customise.
It’s flexible, it’s youth-led, and it’s all about doing things that actually matter to you. No two weeks have to look the same, you get to shape your experience and make the most of every session.

A space where all of us belong, but nobody has to fit the mould.
This isn’t school. This isn’t college. And this isn’t about the destination.
This is having a go, learning, making, growing – our way.
Growing in confidence. Growing in resilience. Growing the skills we need to thrive.
